What's in this category

These are the text operations that are trivial in a code editor and awkward everywhere else. If you're working in a document, an email, a CMS field, or a spreadsheet cell, there's no obvious way to sort lines alphabetically or strip duplicates — which is what these tools are for.

Counting

Word, character, and line counts sound interchangeable and aren't. Word counts matter for anything with a length requirement — essays, articles, abstracts. Character counts matter where a hard limit is enforced: meta descriptions truncated in search results, social posts, database columns, SMS segments.

Two things surprise people. Different tools disagree on word counts, because hyphenated compounds and numbers are counted inconsistently — so if a limit is being enforced by a specific system, that system's count is the one that matters. And character counts differ depending on whether you count characters or bytes: an emoji is one character but four bytes in UTF-8, which is why a "160 character" field sometimes rejects a shorter string.

Transforming

Case conversion covers the everyday forms — upper, lower, title, sentence — plus the programming conventions: camelCase, snake_case, kebab-case, PascalCase. Converting a list of labels into consistent identifiers is the common use.

Sorting and deduplication handle the list-wrangling jobs: alphabetizing, removing repeats, reversing order. Deduplication is usually the one people want most — merging several lists of emails or IDs and needing the unique set.

Comparing

A diff shows exactly what changed between two versions, line by line. It's the fastest way to answer "what's different?" when two things look the same and behave differently — two config files, a document before and after edits, output that should match and doesn't. Eyeballing that comparison is unreliable; a diff isn't.

Choosing a tool

  • Hitting a length limit? Word or character counter.
  • Inconsistent capitalization? Case converter.
  • Messy list with repeats? Sort lines, then remove duplicates.
  • Two versions that should match? Text diff.
  • Bulk edit across many lines? Find and replace.
  • Text going into code? String escape.
  • Need filler for a layout? Lorem ipsum.

Nothing is uploaded

Every tool here runs in your browser. Your text isn't sent anywhere or stored, which matters when the text is a draft, a client document, or a list of real email addresses.
